Notes from the Underground

What with the feel good do good season approaching it's all I can do not to bang myself against a wall.

Trying to figure out a way to make ten dollars (borrowed) stretch over three weeks is a good way to get your mathematical skills sharpened. In fact, I'm now a whiz. For example, if I were paid a cent for every resume I sent out, I'd be in a position to tide a country over its deficits.

Bright spot in life currently- Isaac Asimov. The man has single-handedly given me something to look forward to. And I figure even at the rate of four books a week, it will be nearly three years before I finish reading everything he wrote. That's all for now.

Feeling every bit my curmudgeony 29 year old over-educated unemployed self.

Ghost Sites

What's it with dead restaurant websites misleading poor road warriors? It was a grey, freezing day with relentless rain but I trudged it to Manhattan from Long Island to meet a friend from grad school.

I had suggested the night before that we meet at a tapas bar on West 38th street. I checked out their website- a regular report card of zagat surveys and blah blah - sized up their average price (the unemployed can't be too careful)- and then imagine my shock when I go there and find the restaurant is gone! 'Pouf' like in little bubbles with cerrated edges in comic strips. I guess the internet's all fine and dandy, but nothing like a good old fashioned phone.

And nothing can really replace good old walking about to explore.

We discovered a really great Balkan food place on 38th street and between 7th and 8th avenue- Djerdan. The house wine is good, although the choice is conservative- white: Pinot Grigio/Chardonnay, red: Merlot/Cabernet. We spent about $42 between the three of us. Not too bad.

oh well. It really is freezing.

Why Maya-Mesis?

No, my name isn't Maya, therefore any temptations to see this blog as Maya's messes will not lead anywhere as Maya does not exist.

Maya-Mesis comes from my attempt at the fusion of two major ideas, one that of Maya and illusion from Eastern philosopy, and that of mimesis and imitation of the ideal from Western philosophy.

Having said this, it's nothing more than an interesting name- to me.

A manifest lack of manifestos- do not look to this blog for a theme. Expect everything from film reviews, recipes, dark mutterings of an over-educated, unemployed filmmaker/writer. For this is what it is. After many months of looking for work, this filmmaker/writer of many useless paper degrees, short films and fiction, has decided to externalize her mood-swings by driving her readers crazy instead. How's that!

See you soon. My baby is a day old. I think I'm going to keep it.

Ta ta-

Maya for now.
